The Workings are weekly essays on how organizations actually operate, vs. how they're supposed to. They're written from the engine room, where shiny strategies go to die. The names are changed. Nothing else is.
Most musings about work and process are told from the boardroom.
The view from there is impressive, ordered, strategic. You save it for reference.
The view from where the work actually happens is different:
messier, more particular, and almost always more interesting.
And decidedly more useful.
This publication is about that view.
I run Kingdom Noël, an industrial sociology consultancy that focuses on business processes, technology adoption and team behavior. I come from the trenches.
Each essay strives to reveal a specific mechanism that is worth understanding: how broken processes look like they’re working, why precious routines break, what an org chart conceals. The pieces are more diagnostic than prescriptive, meant as an invitation to discuss; closer to a foreman talking shop than a consultant explaining what should be done.
What The Workings is not: industry commentary, a how-to blog, hot takes, or “thought leadership”. It is not here to convince, it was created to show.
